UAV Gripper Module

Mesh

The goal of this project was to produce a lightweight, modular payload capture system. After attempting to use magnets and claw-like grippers (which were either too bulky, or not sufficiently robust) we decided to use an “Electromechanical Velcro” system. This system gripped onto the payload by directly contacting a fabric mesh attached to the payload, then actuating a set of saw-tooth blades in opposite directions to create gripping tension within the mesh. The actuation could be reversed to release the payload. The system we developed was eventually integrated onto a 3D-printed vehicle and tested successfully with a 100g payload.

My Role

My role was to design, analyze, prototype, and test the gripper. I also programmed a microcontroller to issue commands to the gripper motor and communicate with the vehicle’s main flight control system. Additionally, I designed the airframe for the 3D printed UAV which was eventually used to test the gripper.
